A good few years ago, my friend H went to visit her family in the states and her mom was generous enough to part with some of her stash. I blogged about the start of the quilt a while back (In february last year - go figure) and then the top wound up in the cupboard, since I was so busy sewing for other people Well, this year marked a new season, and I finally have finished it :) Doing the happy dance right now Thank you H and M. H (!) here is a bit of what I have been up to with the fabric from your mom. The cutting stage.... I think I am crazy to tackle this, but once I started going, it will become easier and quicker. So, here is one of the corner pieces.

In case you thought I was lazing around at home doing nothing :) These are going to be gifts - yes, I'm giving them away! I need the space in my cupboard.

The last month has been taken up by thesis writing, but a four-day reprieve in the middle of it was enough to see my friend H and sew a quilt. H and I went to Inthaka Island, in the middle of Cape Town - well if Century City still counts as middle :) We did a bit of walking and watching. I do not have a fantastic camera, but here is a taste of what to expect. The next few days then were spent finishing this quilt - I think the most frustrating thing I have ever sewn, because of the squares toward the middle and having to stuff the entire quilt through the machine each time. BUT it is done and I'm actually quite pleased how it turned out. I have decided to sell it, so, any takers? Email me for further details.

I started the first about three years ago, noticed I had too many squares and then JUST HAD TO start a second one. Finished the second top last week and had the backing and batting already washed from last year, rearing to go. Quilting took Friday evening and Saturday. Binding then just about another hour. After burning my hand twice in the same spot the other day, I decided it was time to finish the quilt I had started about a year ago. Unfortunately I'm not nearly done, because I have to make a second one (I bought too much batting :) - oh the joys of fabric shopping). I also have not found a backing fabric yet and need to do some hinting. So, in the meantime, to pass the evenings of procrastinating on assignments and wedding dress, I did some DIY: I had rescued this chair form the trash quite a while ago and on Saturday took it apart, sanded it down, to look like this: Then re-assembled the chair, like this: You can see that I decided not to sand right down to the wood. I did this intentionally to give the chair some character and also to avoid having to paint it with another colour, since I wanted to give it an "antique" finish with crackling varnish.
